Hi!
Thanks for opening this email / reading this post.
Your weekly link rations - don’t read them all at once!
I would be lying if I said I knew what a “debt ceiling” is, but this article is a great explainer and also has a fun solution - big coins!
This is going to sound insane coming from me, today, but - I really do love Jimmy Butler. Though I currently have a basketball-sized hole in my heart, I think everyone should be charmed by his little hotel-room coffeeshop and scrappy, underdog story.
A super dark story about two WILD (and married!) Los Angeles chefs who were very popular and now are not, for reasons that make me kinda sick. If you’re little freak who loves true crime, enjoy.
The only people left on Twitter are sentient cans of Monster energy drink, which happens to be the ideal audience for apartheid’s failson, Elon Musk. And it’s clear the thing he craves most is the yearbook superlative of “Class Clown,” so a handful of real writers have some notes to punch up his jokes.
Tunes to start the week with:
I dunno guys, I’m kinda sad. I’m in a bit of a music rut recently, and haven’t found much new stuff I connect with (or as much as I normally do), which I honestly think says more about me than the contemporary state of music. But! In times like these I rely heavily on my “comfort albums” - stuff I know front and back, no surprises, just songs I can sing every word to. I’m sharing a few here, and hoping you’ll send me some in return.
Broken Social Scene, You Forgot It In People - a sad girl classic. “Anthems For A Seventeen Year Old Girl” puts this bad boy at the top of my list. Chant that shit in your car and tell me it doesn’t revive your soul. “Lover’s Spit” is also a deeply underated love song.
PJ Harvey, Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea - a peaceful Polly Jean. It’s a little softer than her usual stuff, joyful in places and contemplative everywhere else. “Good Fortune” is the song in my movie montage where I finally figure it out and make things happen.
New Order, Power, Corruption & Lies - so pretty, so melodic. I love how nostalgic it feels, without being dated. “Age of Consent” is an all-timer, but “The Village” and “Your Silent Face” are so sweet and perfect I gotta mention them.
xx
