Hi!
Thanks for opening this email / reading this post.
This newsletter will be my last one for a minute. It might seem small, but this bad boy takes up some serious time and energy. It also means being extremely online, which I realize is not something that should be practiced in perpetuity. So! I’m taking a short break to write other stuff and not obsessively read the news.
A few links for the road:
I would fully be on an FBI watchlist right now if smart liberals like Jamelle Bouie weren’t spoon-feeding me very rational and historically-informed political takes on the upcoming election. If you are also plagued by nihilism, I recommend giving these a whirl! (Bonus: he is a style icon)
A great essay on the hideous way contemporary American fiction treats fat people, in literature and real life. This piece really spoke to me, especially as writers are seen more and more as a “brand.”
I really loved (and deeply related to) this Charlotte Shane essay on trying to find peace via religion. Capitalism/individualism have sort of warped our perception of spirituality, especially the hateful American variants bent on destruction, but what if scripture wasn’t used as a cudgel, but instead became a safe place to gain resilience and sentience?
Tunes to start the week with:
My buddy Toby (pretty much the Godfather of Grindcore) has a new album coming out with his band, Sheenjek. It drops on June 20th, and he was insanely generous to offer BandCamp codes to a few special Mondays, Amirite readers. So if you like face-melting punk music, hit me up! And if you’re in Portland, OR, make sure to check them out live.
There’s also a bunch of good stuff that dropped last week. Charli xcx and Kaytranada are dedicated to providing you dancable grooves all summer long. And this Marg interview with Mount Kimbie lead me to this great Chanel Beads album. It’s really beautiful and unexpected, kind of like Mount Kimbie themselves.
xx
PS: if you come across anything that is meant to live in this newsletter once she’s back in action, just respond to this email and I will be grateful for your service <3
