Hi!
Thanks for opening this email / reading this post.
Yesterday at LizCo, we observed the global strike for Gaza (full disclosure: I’m the board, the boss, and the singular employee). Now let’s get this year over with:
The economy is good and any insistence otherwise means you don’t love Joe Biden enough.
You wanna know how I can tell the economy is good? This lemonade can kill you. It’s an omen to those of us old enough to remember when Four Loko pulled us out of the last recession.
The New Yorker, normally a safe-haven for moneyed writers of leisure, had some layoffs! Even Andy Borowitz got axed! Someone should tell them the economy is actually good!
While I still endorse Renaissance with my entire heart and soul, this review really scratched the critical part of my brain that screams, “never trust a rich person!” Arguing against a Black woman who has built a community for thousands of people in need of a safe space is not my assignment, but I’m so glad that Angelica Jade Bastién analyzes some of the darker and more disappointing parts of Beyoncé, and celebrities in general.
Finally, Happy Chanukah to Jewish friends of the newsletter. I’m pretty sure I shared this essay last year, but I feel like it’s even more brilliant now, in the context of an ideological battle being waged by those the farthest away from real danger. Sending lots of love and light.
Tunes to start the week with:
I look forward to Matthew Schnipper’s Deep Voices 100 Best Songs playlist every year. His listening habits alone put him in a totally different league, patiently sifting through the modern music landscape with a democratic ear, like a Bandcamp Coleridge. I will classify a lot of this music as “challenging,” which makes it even more satisfying when you really connect with a track. It’s on Spotify and Apple Music.
