one of the mondayest mondays
Hi!
Thanks for opening this email.

me, explaining this newsletter to people
Things that I've been thinking about; or, my burden to share:
I've come across several "#corecore" TikToks in the past weeks, and they've gotten me thinking about how we classify art, and its barrier for entry. Here's a (kind of corny) explainer on what corecore is and some of my favorite examples. I love when a format, like a video collage, is sort of reconfigured into a niche part of pop culture, engaging way more people than a quiet, dark room in a museum. I'm also pretty stoked the kids are making tone poems.
This week's moment in schadenfreude.
A unified theory of cringe, and the origins of internet humor (epic bacon, anyone?).
Last week, Republicans were offered the chance to demonstrate their grown-up, no-nonsense brand of politics that will take our country back to the good old days. So naturally, they all fucked up as hard as humanly possible. There are a lot of funny takes and interesting break downs of what exactly happened with Kevin McCarthy (my guess is a humiliation kink), but the best I saw is copied below, from Alexandra Petri in WaPo:

Tunes to start the week with:
I made a little playlist yesterday, inspired by weak winter light and the feeling of grief. Not that kind of "beat your chest and wail at the moon" grief, but the kind that's both familiar and distant, gentle sorrow wrapped in complacency. Grief that will never leave you, but is softened by your gratitude for the love that makes it so painful in the first place.
Maybe chase it with some Charli XCX/Rina Sawayama :)
