Hi!
Thanks for opening this email / reading this post.
The internet is a very scary place this week! Carefully selected links below, that are safe for consumption during dark times:
A portrait of actual bravery in the face of violence. This man is stronger than any military on the planet.
This article on “Literary It Girls” has been making the rounds on hot take Twitter. As a girl writer (no “it” due my Boston location and BMI) my take is, “hey, at least they’re finishing books!” Privileged dilettantes have occupied the literary world for centuries, but it seems these ones are less focused on impressing the stuffy old guard, and more on having a good time, which minus the capitalist undertones, isn’t the worst thing.
Unproblematic king Martin Scorcese is now on Letterboxd, which means there is a masterclass on “cinema” at our fingertips. While an obvious GOAT of the director game, his film preservation efforts are also unmatched and we are so lucky he’s handing this stuff out for free!
Phoebe Philo dot com is now live, but in the time I registered for the emails and started squirrelling away little handbag cash, Iman (most important supermodel and one half of the chicest couple of all-time) came out against the celebrated designer regarding her shitty racist past (and probably present, let’s be real), and saved me some money at the same time.
I am obsessed with Spooky Lake Month - the creator has slight true crime vibes, but that didn’t stop me from learning about bog bodies and brinecicles.
You rarely have to hand it to the Brits, but one thing they have a lock on is satire. I have been loving Laura K’s Normal Island News for a shared sense of, “am I going completely insane?”
Tunes to start the week with:
A new album from Peruvian DJ Sophia Kourtesis is dance music made for actual dancing (TY Mike for the rec!). The Floating Points/Pharoah Sanders album from 2021 is getting a lot of play due to an “ambient jazz” moment I’m having (yeah, I’m pretty fucking annoying). And Cat Power plays another prolific storyteller, Bob Dylan. Chan can cover the hell out of a song and Dylan feels like an especially good fit.
