Hi!
Thanks for opening this email / reading this post.
Some stuff to read instead of whatever email your corporate communications department cooks up about Indigenous People or Israel.
My anecdotal take is that Twitter has officially become the number one website for people who dabble in phrenology and men who use the term “peaked” regarding women reaching puberty. For a more journalistic read on the current state of the website now known as “X” (lol), here’s a good explainer.
If you feel skeptical about stores shutting down due to organized crime, your instincts are right! Turns out “massive retail theft” actually means “we don’t pay our own employees enough to survive so they subsidize their income with stolen products.” However, news outlets will still continue to cover their shitty corporate spin and your aunt will still think Seattle is the Thunderdome.
Whenever atrocious acts of war happen, I remember this Susan Sontag piece written in the wake of 9/11. I think of her words constantly (specifically the ones in here) and how she brilliantly articulates the American obsession with violence and power.
Meta has unknowingly gifted the world another AI nightmare, this time in the form of cute little stickers. In their defensive, I too could not imagine anyone wanting “Karl Marx Large Breasts” clip art.
I would rather do ayahuasca with my high school bullies than admit I fell for something this dumb. TLDR: don’t send your life-savings to strangers using random cash apps.
Tunes to start the week with:
A really good new ambient release from Shuta Hasunuma, a tribute to the cutest Belle & Sebastian album, and my playlist of an answer to the question no one asked: what would the “Pure Moods” of 2023 sound like?
